Aug. 29, 2007

Berkeley - Former California softball catcher Haley Woods was hired as the new head coach at The Notre Dame de Namur University on Wednesday. NDNU is located in Belmont, Calif.

Prior to her arrival at NDNU, Woods served as the head coach at Castilleja High School last season, guiding the program to a WBAL Championship.

Woods, who hit .355 with 16 home runs and 55 RBI as a senior with the Golden Bears, was named the 2006 National Diamond Sports Catcher of the Year. Woods, who also earned first-team All-American honors as a senior, completed her Cal career as the Bears' all-time leader in RBI (191) and total bases (413).

Woods appeared in three College World Series and was twice named All-Pac-10 and All-Pacific Region.

'I am extremely excited to take on the challenge of coaching at NDNU,' said Woods. 'We have high expectations for this season and are very excited to get to work.'

The Argos finished last season with an 18-36 record and return seven starters including three All-Pac West performers.
