Fab Freshmen Lead The Way In 3-0 Sweep Of Cal State Northridge
Aug. 30, 2007
LOS ANGELES - Freshman outside hitter Kimmee Roleder (Pasadena/Pasadena HS) led the No. 4 USC Women of Troy to a 3-0 sweep (30-18, 30-22, 31-29) over the Cal State Northridge Matadors to open the 2007 USC Classic on Thursday at the Galen Center. Roleder recorded a team-high 14 kills for a .370 performance (14-4-27), along with seven digs, four service aces and two blocks.
Freshman middle blocker Zoe Garrett (Laguna Beach/Laguna Beach HS) had 10 kills on the evening with an ace, three digs and four blocks. Roleder and Garrett both played for the U.S. Junior National Team this summer.
Seniors Asia Kaczor and Diane Copenhagen had eight kills each as Kaczor had an efficient match, hitting .471 (8-0-17). USC (4-0) hit .322 for the match and held Cal State Northridge (1-3) to a .115 night.
Angela Hupp led the Matadors with 10 kills, 12 assists, eight digs and three blocks while Siara Grayson had nine kills for a .421 performance (9-1-19).
With sloppy play by the Women of Troy early in game one, the Matadors took advantage and jumped out to an 11-9 lead. Three service aces, however, by USC led to a 8-2 run as the host team reclaimed the lead. Garrett added back-to-back kills as the Trojans went on to take the first game. Roleder accounted for five kills, three service aces and three digs in the game.
Both teams traded points in game two before USC was able to creep ahead with a 20-17 advantage. Roleder used a kill and service ace to bookmark a Kaczor solo block as an 8-1 run cemented the 2-0 match lead for the Trojans.
Grayson helped the Matadors jump to a 20-12 lead in game three and threatened to take the match to four games before the Trojans woke up. Down 23-18, Roleder's kill started a five-spot to tie the game. Roleder's back row kill gave match point to USC, but Jenn Probert forced extra play with a kill for a 29-29 tie. Copenhagen hit her final kill and a USC block secured the sweep.
The USC Classic continues tomorrow with three matches on the schedule. No. 14 Duke will face Mercer at noon, Mercer will play again at 5 p.m. against Cal State Northridge and Duke will face USC in the final match of the day at 7 p.m. The USC-Duke match will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com, courtesy of TrojanTV All-Access.
