'In My Own Words: Karl Dorrell' Debuts on Saturday
Aug. 30, 2007
FSN PRIME TICKET Reporter Michael Eaves sits down with Bruins Head Football Coach Karl Dorrell for a new UCLA edition of 'In My Own Words.' Dorrell, the program's 15th head football coach and one of only six (119 total) African American NCAA football coaches, talks about how his mentors such as Terry Donahue, UCLA Football Head Coach (1976-1995) and Mike Shanahan, current Head Coach for the Denver Broncos, have influenced his personal brand of leadership and shaped his individual philosophy on coaching.
'In My Own Words: Karl Dorrell' debuts on FSN PRIME TICKET on Saturday, September 1 at 4:30 PM. The half-hour program follows the FSN PRIME TICKET 12:30 PM game telecast of UCLA's 2007 season opening game at Stanford and complete post-game coverage on 'Bruins Live' at 4 PM.
Selected soundbites from 'In My Own Words: Karl Dorrell':
Despite UCLA's 13 to 9 victory over USC last season Dorrell is not living in the past: 'I'm ready to play this year, in '07, and that was last year's score and last year's game.'
How he helps the players focus: 'They need to know that the leader of this program is a rock. He's steady in front of the ship and he's gonna go through a lot of storms and you are not going to see him flinch.'
Why he appreciated but ultimately turned down Dan Guerrero's offer of a contract extension after his first year as Head Coach: 'It wasn't earned. That's the bottom line...That's the old school part of me...I didn't have a proven track record.'
On Indianapolis Colt's Tony Dungy becoming the first African American Head Coach to win the Super Bowl in 2007: 'For him to win that game just proved to me that you don't need to change who you are. Just be yourself and coach this game as passionately as anyone else and you get a chance to be a champion.'
The 1982 graduate of Helix High School in San Diego is aware of how much easier he had it than his parent's generation: 'I really appreciate everything that I have. I don't take anything for granted. And I try to tell our players about that...they have to understand the significance, particularly of the African American heritage to appreciate what they have now.'
Dorrell finds his coaching inevitably affects how he is raising his two children: 'I want them to understand that life's not fair. They get a pretty good dose of that because of what I do.'
Encore presentations of 'In My Own Words: Karl Dorrell' air on FSN PRIME TICKET in September as follows: Sept. 3 at 10 PM; Sept. 5 at 10 PM; Sept. 7 at 3:30 PM; Sept. 10 at 10 PM and 12:30 AM; Sept. 14 at 3:30 PM; Sept. 18 at 6 PM; Sept. 22 at 10:30 PM and Sept. 24 at 10 PM.
'In My Own Words' strips down the documentary form to just three elements for a sports personality -- his or her own face, voice and story -- to present an intimate profile of some of the most compelling figures in the sports world. In its portrayal, each half-hour episode of 'In My Own Words' is devoted to one subject and centers on and pivots off of a never-before-seen sit-down interview with that person. The program adds previously unaired interviews, locker room sound bites, and candid footage to the mix to further focus the viewer on the subject.
