Freshman Feet Deliver In #14 USC's 5-1 Opening Win
Aug. 31, 2007
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - Four USC freshmen had a foot in all three of the Trojans' first-half goals, as the #14 Women of Troy opened season on Ali Khosroshahin's coaching career at Troy with a 5-1 nonconference win over Weber State on Friday afternoon at McAlister Field. Led by a pair of goals from freshman forward Megan Ohai, the USC women's soccer team peeled out to a 4-0 advantage before the Wildcats managed a goal in the 65th minute of action. The win boosts the Trojans' 2007 start to 1-0-0 as then now turn to continue nonconference play with a road trip to UC Santa Barbara at 6 p.m. on Sunday (Sept. 2).
The Women of Troy displayed a diverse and dynamic attack in their opening match, as five freshman got starting nods and sophomore goalkeeper Kristin Olsen saw her first full 90 minutes in goal. Starting freshman defender Karter Haug served up the assist to fellow freshman Ohai for the first tally of the game for the Trojans, sending a long ball from the right sideline up to the top of the box for Ohai. Ohai beat Weber State goalie Rebecca Ritchie to the ball and sent a one-touch chip to the back of the net to notch a 1-0 lead for USC in the 24th minute.
Although it doesn't go down as a direct assist, freshman midfielder Ashli Sandoval helped set up Ohai's second set of heroics. Her sailing corner kick was tracked down by Wildcat keeper Ritchie, who knocked it down toward the waiting foot of Ohai. Ohai drilled in the opportunity for a 2-0 lead, securing her first career game-winner at USC with a score in the 32nd minute. Barely two minutes later, it was a freshman-senior connection that generated a third goal for the Women of Troy. Freshman midfielder Alyssa Davila pushed up a ball to senior forward Lauren Brown, and Brown jumped all over her chance with a swift strike to the left side of the net for a 3-0 USC advantage in the 34th minute. Brown's goal marked the senior's eighth career goal. The rest of the half would pass fairly quietly, although Weber State did earn its second corner kick opportunity before the break.
Another Sandoval corner lofted its way toward several eager heads, but neither Meagan Holmes nor Ashley Nick were able to punch the ball through the Weber State defense early in the second half. Fifteen minutes into the half, the Trojans hit their mark once again, however. Davila set up Sandoval off the corner for a centering ball in the box, USC's first shot was saved, but junior defender Janessa Currier gathered up the rebound and rocketed it in to lift USc ahead 4-0 in the 60th minute.
Four minutes later, Weber State would get its goal. After USC was whistled for a foul on the left side of the field in Trojan territory, Wildcat Hayley McCoy lined up for the free kick and blasted it toward Whitney Smith, who sent a one-timer crosscage to make it 4-1 USC. In the 82nd minute, sophomore midfielder Jamie Petrossi delivered a cross to junior midfielder Ashley Nick on the left side. The team co-captain unloaded a hard shot across the goal to lock down USC's fifth goal of the game and a 5-1 victory in the Trojans' home opener. In her first full game of her career, USC's Kristin Olsen had three saves against four shots on goal. Weber State's Ritchie had seven saves against 12 shots on goal.
