Huskis Power Their Way to Sweep of Gonzaga

SPOKANE ¬- Freshman outside hitter Becky Perry had 13 kills, and two other Husky players had 12 kills apiece, as the No. 8 Washington volleyball team swept Gonzaga 3-0 on the first day of the Gonzaga Tournament in Spokane, Wash. The Huskies hit .409 as a team as they improved to 4-0 on the season. Game scores were 30-23, 30-13, 30-21.
Washington limited the Bulldogs, who fell to 2-3 with the loss, to just a .125 hitting percentage. The Huskies also tallied 21 blocks on the night, compared to just five for Gonzaga.
Perry was one of five Husky players to have at least eight kills and hit better than .300 against the Bulldogs. Senior Christal Morrison and junior Jessica Swarbrick each had 12 kills, while senior Alesha Dessing and freshman Kindra Carlson had eight kills apiece. Deesing had the highest hitting percentage for UW at .667, followed by Carlson at .571, Swarbrick at .450, Morrison at .357 and Perry at .333.
Freshman setter Jenna Hagglund had 46 assists on the night and is now averaging 14.75 assists per game on the year. Hagglund had matches of 41, 41 and 49 assists last weekend in the Husky Classic. Sophomore libero Tamari Miyashiro paced UW with 16 digs.
The Huskies play two more games in the tournament tomorrow. UW faces Boise State at 11 a.m. before taking on Morgan State at 5 p.m.
