Aug. 31, 2007
SAN DIEGO - The 11th-ranked California men's soccer team started the 2007 campaign on a high note, as the Golden Bears defeated the University of San Diego, 2-0, Friday afternoon at Torero Stadium.
Cal (1-0) earned the victory behind goals from freshmen Davis Paul and Servando Carrasco. Paul, who was selected one of College Soccer News' '100 Freshmen From Coast To Coast To Keep An Eye On,' netted the first goal. He took a center pass from fellow freshman Andrew Wiedeman before finding the back of the net in the 41st minute.
Carrasco increased the Bear's lead in the second half with his goal. In the 64th minute, he booted a ball in the top right corner of the net.
The Bears were able to secure the victory despite being out shot 14-10 and earning only one corner kick. Sophomore Stefan Frei tallied four saves, as did his counterpart, Kelin Briones, from USD (0-1).
Cal returns to Berkeley next weekend for the 11th annual adidas Cal Legacy Classic at Edwards Stadium. The Bears will face Penn Friday, Sept. 7, at 4 p.m. and Wisconsin Sunday, Sept. 9, at 1:30 p.m.
