Viehweg Leads Bruin Women at Nevada Twilight Classic
Aug. 31, 2007
Junior Ciara Viehweg led the Bruin women to a third-place finish in the opening meet of the 2007 cross country season, the Nevada Twilight Classic. UC Riverside was first (21 points), followed by Nevada (49 points), UCLA (53 points), Sacramento State (124 points) and Humboldt State (130 points).
Viehweg led the way in the 4k race in a time of 16:02. Olga Aulet-Leon joined Viehweg in the top-10 with her ninth-place run of 16:03. Lauren Jirges (11th, 16:09), Shannon Murakami (12th, 16:12) and Cobbie Jones (16th, 16:30) rounded out the Bruins in the top-20.
'This is a team that without the contributions of Allie Bohannon and Claire Rethmeier, is vulnerable to teams that are able to run as a tight pack as UC Riverside did today,' said head coach Eric Peterson. 'Our women did a great job of getting out and controlling the race from the front for the first half of the race, but when the pace picked up, our athletes didn't respond quite as well as the other teams did and unfortunately, it was a loss.
'I was really pleased with how tough Ciara and Olga ran throughout the race in leading the team. Olga broke the race open and Ciara responded to it. We are lacking in depth and that's what makes us vulnerable to other teams. We have a lot of areas to improve and the team is up to the challenge. We anticipate the return of Claire and Allie as we move forward in the season.
'Shannon and Cobbie started their college seasons on a positive note. They feel there is a lot more there to improve on and that improvement will be welcomed throughout the season. There enthusiasm and excitement of starting their college careers and getting better will be a major impact in how well our team competes throughout the season. '
The Bruins will continue altitude training before returning to Southern California for the Pepperdine Invitational on September 22.
