Volleyball Splits Doubleheader In Hilton Phoenix/East Mesa Challenge Opener

TEMPE, Ariz. - The 2007 Hilton Phoenix/East Mesa Challenge kicked off on Friday with the Sun Devil volleyball team opening their home slate and split their doubleheader, beating Long IslandUniversity 3-0 before falling to New Mexico to put their record at 1-4 on the season. The tournament rolls on tomorrow with ASU facing Iowa State a 1 p.m. at Wells Fargo Arena.

 

Game One slotted the Sun Devils against the Long Island Blackbirds (2-1) which saw freshman, Sarah Reaves lead and set a career-high record of 18 kills as ASU came out to sweep the Blackbirds in straight games 30-21, 30-26 and 32-30. Sydney Donahue also recorded 13 more digs to hold down the Sun Devil defense, with Margie Giordano backing her with 12 digs. Staci Smith also came out to grab three service aces in the match to give the Sun Devils their first win of the 2007 season.

 

Game Two saw ASU lock horns with the New Mexico Lobos, who came into the match undefeated at 5-0 after topping IowaState 3-1 earlier in the day. The duel proved to be an even match as ASU came out to take the first game 30-28 before the Lobos came out to grab game two 30-21, ASU stormed back to take game three in a decisive manner 30-22 with the Lobos knotting it at twos in the fourth taking it into an ultimate fifth game. Six tied scores and three lead changes later, the Lobos came out with their record intact as they won their sixth straight taking game five 15-11. Sarah Reaves topped her career kill mark of 18 from earlier today with 19 in the match.

Long Island def. NAU, 3-1

 

The Hilton Phoenix/East Mesa Challenge will roll on tomorrow with a 11 a.m. match-up of New Mexico and Northern Arizona and the Sun Devils taking on Iowa State at 1 p.m. No admission fee will be charged due to the ASU football game versus San JoseState later in the evening.
