BOZEMAN, Mont. -- The Washington State volleyball team recovered from its first loss of the season Saturday morning and came back to defeat Utah State in an evening match with game scores of 30-26, 30-23, 30-23, at the Montana State Holiday Inn Classic tournament.
WSU finishes a five-match week with an overall record of 7-1 while Utah State dropped to a record of 204. The Cougars finished second in the tournament with a 2-1 record. WSU's Maureen Perez (senior, Vancouver, Wash.) and Brittany Johnson (junior, Phoenix, Ariz.) were named to the all-tournament team.
In the Saturday evening match, Jackie Albright's 12 kills led the Cougars while the front line of Tara West, six blocks, and Cassie Robbins, five blocks, contributed to WSU's 12.5 team blocks. Stephanie Weishaar had 12 digs and Maureen Perez had 30 assists and a pair of service aces. Senior Adetokunbo Faleti sat out the match with a sore knee but is expected to compete next weekend at the tournament at the University of Nevada.
Utah State's Amanda Nielson had a match-high 18 kills with Jessalyn Payne tagging 12 digs and Hether Hillier giving 31 assists. Danielle Taylor and Kris Hymas each had three blocks. The Aggies hit .074 and WSU hit .225 for the match.
'We were a little tentative to start the match but late in game one we built a three-point lead and I think it gave us a little bit of confidence and we ended up playing really aggressively towards the end of that game,' Cougar Head Coach Brian Heffernan said. 'We played pretty well throughout the rest of games two and three.'
WSU travels next weekend to Reno, Nev., to play against Hofstra, UNLV and host Nevada at the AT&T Invitational.
