ASU Soccer Falls to UNLV 2-1 Sunday in Las Vegas
Sept. 2, 2007
LAS VEGAS - The Arizona State soccer team was defeated by the UNLV Rebels 2-1, Sunday at Peter Johann Memorial Field in Las Vegas. The Sun Devils are now 1-1-0 on the season and the Rebels improve to 2-0-0 overall.
The Sun Devils put up a fight for much of the first half, despite the Rebels taking an early 2-0 lead going into the break.
The first score came off a corner kick for UNLV, as freshman Amanda Forrester headed it into the back of the net during the 31st minute of the game. The second goal for the Rebels was also a header, this time off a free kick in the 36th minute.
ASU came out strong in the second half as freshman Karin Volpe scored her first collegiate goal off a rebounded save from her own shot in the 46th minute of the game. The goal capped off the scoring for the match, as the Sun Devils held UNLV scoreless in the second half.
In total, ASU put up 23 shots to UNLV's 12, as well as kicking seven more corner kicks than the Rebels.
'We outplayed them and should have won this game,' said head coach Kevin Boyd. 'We made some young errors as a team, things that showed our inexperience and put the other team in position to score. Overall, I am happy with the way we played the game of soccer and the progress that we are making as a team.'
Sophomore goalkeeper Briana Silvestri recorded seven saves in the loss for ASU.
'Even though Briana gave up two goals, she was still the hero for us today on the field,' said Boyd. 'She came up big for us with some of her saves this afternoon.'
The Sun Devils play host to the no. 9 Texas Longhorns Friday, Sept. 7 in their home opener. It will be the first ever meeting between the schools. Game time is set for 7 p.m. from Sun Devil Soccer Stadium in Tempe.
