Sept. 2, 2007
CULIACAN, SINOLOA, MEXICO - The USC men's basketball team led by 29 points each by freshmen Davon Jefferson and O.J. Mayo defeated the Caballeros de Culiacan 102-82 tonight (Sept. 1) in an exhibition game played in Culiacan, Mexico.
The Trojans trailed in the game 59-52 at halftime as the hot-shooting Caballeros hit eight three-pointers, but USC turned up the defense in the second half and outscored Culiacan 50-23. Mayo and Jefferson led the offense all night as in each half one scored 15 points and the other 14. Taj Gibson was the next highest scorer for USC with nine points. Eleven of the 12 Trojans who made the trip scored at least one point. Guards Daniel Hackett and Dwight Lewis did not make the trip. Hackett was given the trip off after playing all summer with the Italian National Team and Lewis stayed back in Los Angeles as he was suffering flu-like symptoms.
The teams were slated to play a second game, but agreed to play just the one contest after the first game ended around 10 p.m. local time. The game ended a long day for the Trojans who met on campus at 7 a.m., then flew to Mazatlan, made a three-hour bus ride to Culiacan and then had 10-15 minutes to warm up before the game.
USC Scoring By Player: Mayo-29, Jefferson-29, Gibson-9, Diarra-7, Simmons-7, Wetherell-7, Austin-6, Green-3, Cromwell-2, Cunningham-2, Wilkinson-1.
Due to flood damage at the gymnasium in Mazatlan, USC will not play any games on Sunday as originally schedule and will return to Los Angeles on Monday.
