No. 14 USC Snags 2-0 Win Over UC Santa Barbara
Sept. 3, 2007
SANTA BARBARA, CALIF. - The No. 14-ranked USC women's soccer team saw freshman Megan Ohai notch her third career goal and second game-winner in two games, as the Trojans improved their 2007 mark to 2-0-0 with a 2-0 win over host UC Santa Barbara on Sunday evening. The Gauchos move to 1-1-0 on the year with the loss.
After a stop-and-go four-hour busride to Santa Barbara, the Women of Troy were able to find a working rhythm in the game. After allowing the Gauchos a couple trips deep into Trojan territory, USC countered with several offensive challenges.
Two USC corner kicks within five minutes of each other were swiftly converted into goals, thanks to the deft left foot of freshman Ashli Sandoval. After 35 minutes of action, the Trojans earned their first corner kick of the match. Sandoval lined up and lofted a ball into the box. Freshman defender Kasey Johnson trapped it down and edged it out to fellow freshman Megan Ohai, who promptly deposited the ball into the left side of the goal for her third goal of her young Trojan career.
Just under five minutes later, a USC strike brought up another Trojan corner from the other side of the field. Again, Sandoval sent a strong ball into the box, and this time junior Janessa Currier was there with a header to junior defender Meagan Holmes. Holmes volleyed the ball to the back of the net, and the Trojans were boosted to a 2-0 advantage as halftime drew near.
Seven minutes into the second half, UCSB got a good look on goal, as Kailyn Kugler took a hard shot to the left side, but USC goalkeeper Kristin Olsen tracked it down and made the diving save. On the ensuing corner kick, Olsen snagged the ball out of the air to stymie the Gaucho strike. USC's next two corner kicks of the half would be stopped by UCSB. Alyssa Davila got in a diving header in the box late in the game, but the ball was snagged by UCSB keeper Katie Wright.
The Trojans return to nonconference action next week with a road trip to Indiana. There, USC faces Maryland in Bloomington, Ind., on Friday (Sept. 7) and then faces host Indiana on Sunday (Sept. 9).
