No. 4 USC Wipes Out Pepperdine With 3-0 Sweep

LOS ANGELES - Senior All-American Asia Kaczor (Wroclaw, Poland/College of Southern Idaho) recorded a team-high 20 kills for a .486 performance (20-2-37) on Wednesday as the No. 4 USC Women of Troy swept the Pepperdine Waves (30-22, 30-23, 30-28) in nonconference action at the Galen Center. Kaczor added nine digs, three block assists and 21.5 points in the winning effort.
USC improved to 7-0 on the season while Pepperdine fell to 4-3 overall.
Senior Diane Copenhagen (Saratoga/St. Francis HS) chipped in 14 kills and five digs while hitting .355 (14-3-31) while sophomore setter Taylor Carico (Manhattan Beach/Mira Costa HS) had 40 assists on the night with three kills, six digs and one service ace. USC freshman libero Geena Urango (Los Alamitos/Los Alamitos HS) had 10 digs and three service aces.
Lecca Roberts dominated for Pepperdine, recording a blistering .750 (12-0-16) in the match and tied for the team high in kills along with Rachel Lumsden, who also had 10 digs.
The Trojans had seven service aces against Pepperdine's lone ace as USC held the Waves to a .183 hitting night.
With an 11-10 lead in the first game, the Trojans used a 5-1 run to add to their cushion. Urango recorded a service ace as Kaczor used three kills in the run. Three straight attack errors by the Waves helped USC to a 21-13 score later in the game. Kaczor closed the game out with her eighth kill for USC's 1-0 match lead.
Down 12-11 in game two, USC broke away with a 10-1 run for a 21-13 lead. Urango added two more service aces during the stretch. Kaczor kept the Trojans ahead with the hat trick, recording three straight terminations as USC took the two-game lead. The Women of Troy had a match-high .421 in the second game.
Both teams battled to an 18-18 tie in game three before USC used a 6-1 run to forge ahead, 24-19. Freshman Zoe Garrett used a kill to push USC to the 28-24 advantage, but the Waves rallied with four straight points to tie the game at 28 apiece. After USC used its final timeout of the game, the Trojans came out and went to the well with Kaczor one more time for game point. Kaczor and senior middle blocker Bethany Johansen combined on the block to finish out the sweep.
USC will play its first road match of the season on Friday (Sept. 7) at Utah. The match starts at 7 p.m. Mountain time.
