Q&A With Cal Volleyball's Kat Reilly
Sept. 5, 2007
BERKELEY, CALIF. - After a year away from the game she loves, redshirt sophomore middle hitter Kat Reilly returns to the volleyball court for the No. 15 California Golden Bears. Averaging a team and conference high 2.67 blocks per game so far, Reilly admits that she enjoys sending a ball back more than she enjoys putting one down on the opposition. But when she decides to attack, opponents be warned, her stellar .510 hitting percentage is also tops amongst her teammates and second in the Pac-10 Conference. The 6-2 standout took some time to sit down with CalBears.com amidst her preparations for this weekends' Golden Bear Invitational where Cal will take on Eastern Kentucky, Utah State and No. 12 Minnesota.
What is your favorite thing to do on the court?
Blocking. It feels a lot better to block a ball than to get a kill because you know that you shut someone else down.
What is your favorite play to run?
I like the quick set--just a simple one because if you can catch them off guard, it's really easy to bang a ball at the 10 foot line. Also, you have a lot of options as to which direction you can hit.
If you could play a different position for one day, what would it be?
I'd be a setter because if I was, that would mean I have good hands. I have awful hands so I'd like to get better at that.
Aside from Cal fans, who has the best fans in the Pac-10?
Washington has great fans; there are always a lot of people there. While they do heckle you, they have very knowledgeable volleyball fans.
What is the best class that you've taken at Cal?
Astronomy of the Planets: I took it right after my surgery last year. I really liked it because I love space and I'd love to be an astronaut if I wasn't so tall.
What is your favorite thing to do off the court?
I love to spend time with my friends; I like to shop and do outdoor things like lying in the sun.
If the team were on American Idol, who would win?
We're all very good singers but Am'ra Solomon has got the full package. She can dance, too!
Who on the team is the fastest on the court?
If you weren't playing volleyball, what would you be doing?
I'd be sleeping a lot more. Other than that, I don't think I'd play basketball--I might go out for lacrosse but it's just so much running. I'm really not a runner. I can do short bursts of running and jumping but running for a long time is just not my style.
What is your favorite movie?
I really like 40-Year-Old Virgin and Old School. Pretty much anything with the whole Vince Vaughn and Will Farrell casts. That whole gang is outstanding.
What song is at the top of your playlist right now?
Any day of the week, I would love to hear some Journey. You can't really ever go wrong with a good Journey song.
What do you eat for breakfast?
It's not a balanced breakfast, but I love my Cinnamon Toast Crunch.
What is the best place to eat on Telegraph?
I like Raleigh's a lot--the burgers there are delicious!
If you could have dinner with any three people, who would they be?
Vince Vaughn, three times.
What is one of your hidden talents?
I like to make people laugh and make people feel good.
Pick three words that best describe your personality.
Funny, but there's got to be a better word than funny... how about hysterical? Energetic and happy!
What is something that most people don't know about you?
I used to play clarinet in the high school marching band. I was also a mascot at my middle school for a year. I had to dress up in a hawk suit. I'm really big into costumes. Any opportunity that I have to dress up, I will go for it.
What three words best describe your game?
I am intense, loud and passionate.
Who or what do you credit most for getting you to where you are today?
My family, my friends and past coaches from all the sports I participated in.
What are your goals this season?
My goal is to stay healthy all year. That's going to always be a constant struggle with me and my knee but so far so good. As a team, I want to see us make it to the Sweet 16 and into the Elite Eight.
