Sept. 7, 2007

NAPA, CALIF. - The USC men's tennis team had six players compete in the first day of action at the Napa Valley Tennis Classic, squaring off against opponents from defending NCAA champion Georgia on Friday. Also competing in the Classic are players from California and North Carolina, which USC will face in the coming two days in Napa.

Four Trojans opened their 2007 fall tennis seasons ranked in the ITA Preseason Singles rankings. Leading the way for the Trojans is senior #43 Kaes Van't Hof, who topped Georgia's Christian Vitulli after a pair of tightly fought first two sets. In the third, Van't Hof got ahead and held on to post a 7-6, (3), 6-7 (3), 6-3 win over Vitulli. Also grabbing an opening singles win with USC was #116 Andrew Piotrowski, who enters his first season of action as a Trojan. He topped Georgia's Chris Motes 7-5, 6-3 on Friday. Sophomore standout Gary Sacks is unranked, but pinned up a decisive victory over Georgia's Josh Varela with a lopsided 6-1, 6-1 decision.

Returning as a sophomore for USC, #125 Robert Farah was up against #58 Nate Schnugg, and the Georgia veteran posted a 7-6 (5), 6-4 win over Farah. Two other Trojans took to the court in their debut seasons with USC, but were unable to grab a singles win. USC newcomer #112 Jaak Poldma squared off against Georgia's #64 Jamie Hunt and fell 6-1, 6-2. Redshirt freshman Jack Levis also was upended on Friday, falling after a marathon tiebreaker in the second set for a 6-4, 7-6 (14-12) decision.

In doubles play, the dynamic duo of Farah/Van't Hof have earned a #21 preseason ranking, and the pair followed it up with an 8-6 win over Georgia's Hunt/Schnugg.
