Final Stats

SEATTLE - Shauna Stapleton scored a pair of unassisted goals Friday, leading Purdue to a 3-1 win over host Washington in the first round of the Husky/Nike Invitational at Husky Soccer Field.

The Huskies dropped to 0-3, losing their home opener for the first time since 1999. The Boilermakers' record improved to 2-1-1.

Senior Dani Bridges (Maple Valley, Wash./Tahoma) put UW in front at 12:15 with her first goal of the season. She ran on to a pass from sophomore Veronica Perez-Murillo (San Mateo, Calif.) and slid an eight-yard shot inside the left post.

That lead was short-lived as Stapleton tallied the equalizer at 17:53, lofting a free kick over UW goalkeeper Taylor Carr (Culver City, Calif.) from 35 yards away.

Stapleton's second goal also came on a set piece as she curved a corner kick into the upper corner at 30:58. The Boilermakers secured the win at 87:28 on a low 12-yard drive by Loredana Riverso.

Carr registered three saves for the Huskies, who were out shot 12-6. Purdue's Jenny Bradfisch saved two shots.

In the opening game of the tournament, top-ranked Portland held off Cal State Fullerton 2-1 behind goals by Rachael Rapinoe and Elli Reed.

The Pilots (2-0) opened the scoring in the third minute on Rapinoe's goal from close range off a pass from Michelle Enyeart. The Titans answered just over three minutes later on a 15-yard volley from Jenae Gibbens off a Nicole Scheid cross.

Reed netted the game-winner at 36:48 on a 15-yard blast.

The tournament teams exchange opponents Sunday with Purdue and Portland meeting at 11 a.m. and the Huskies squaring off with Fullerton at 1:30 p.m.
