Volleyball Takes 3-1 Win Over Hofstra

RENO, Nev. -- The Washington State University volleyball team opened the Nevada AT&T Invitational tournament with a 3-1 win over Hofstra University Friday night at the Virginia Street Gym on the Reno campus.
WSU moved to 8-1 on the season with the 30-12, 22-30, 30-17, 30-20 win over Hofstra (5-2). The Cougs hit .353 for the match and held the Pride to a .107 hitting percentage.
Senior middle blocker Tara West had a match-high 20 kills and hit an outstanding .600 for the four games, committing only two errors in 30 attacks. West, the Perth, Australia native, also had a pair of blocks. Sophomore Jackie Albright added 16 kills with only one error in 32 attacks for a .469 hitting percentage. Brittany Johnson added 12 kills. Maureen Perez had 46 assists, two blocks and seven digs. Sophomore libero Kelly Hyder had a match-high 23 digs and a trio of aces, including two in a seven-point serving stint in the first game.
Hofstra was led by the 12 kills from Lauren Engle while Harmonie Calinda contributed nine kills, 12 digs and a pair of service aces. Ashley Legerretta led the Pride with two blocks and setter Sarah Lopez had 29 assists.
In the first game, WSU went ahead of Hofstra 22-12 when Cougar sophomore libero Hyder stepped to the serving line and did not leave until the Cougs scored seven straight points, including Hyder's two aces, to win the game 30-12.
The Pride came out strong in the second game, quickly taking a seven-point lead and not relinquishing it, leveling the match with a 30-22 win.
WSU countered with a 30-17 win in the third game and kept the momentum for the 30-20 win in the fourth game.
'We were great in the first and third games with really low errors and it showed in the scores,' Cougar Head Coach Brian Heffernan said. 'Our team really felt that we really performed well in all facets of the game in those two games. In the second game we allowed Hofstra to get on a roll and I was pleased we were able to get back on track after game two but as a team we need to do a much better job of taking care of our business every single point we play.'
The Cougars play UNLV Saturday morning and the host school, University of Nevada, Saturday night.
