Cardinal Sweep Chico State Invite

Chico, Calif - Stanford Cross Country men's and women's teams began their season today with a sweep of the Chico State Invite at the Lake Oroville Aquatic Center. The men's team tallied a low score of 29 points, ahead of Chico State with 34 and St. Mary's at 88. The women won with a low score of 28, followed by Chico State with 31 and St. Mary's score of 88.

Senior Teresa McWalters of San Francisco won the women's 6,000 meter race with a time of 20:57, leading a Stanford team that placed four runners in the top six. Senior Lindsay Allen (21:56) of Calabasas, CA, came in third, junior Alicia Follmar (21:56) of Saratoga followed in fourth, and sophomore Madeleine O'Meara (22:07) from Mercer Island, Washington finished in sixth. Junior Shannon Bergstedt (23:07) of Minnetonka, MN came in 14th to round out the Stanford squad.

Redshirt-freshman Justine Marpole-Bird from Vancouver, B.C. led the Stanford men's charge in the 8,000 meter course with a time of 26:20 to take the top collegiate score, bested only by the unattached redshirt-freshman Scott Bauhs' time of 26:13. Senior Lauren Jespersen of Klamath Falls, was the fourth collegiate runner to cross the line with a time of 26:40, followed by Hari Mix (26:46), of Charlottesville, VA, in fifth. Neftalem Araia (26:56) from Indianapolis, Jacob Evans (27:06) of Watsonville, and Chris Mocko (27:40) McLean, VA, rounded out the Cardinal runners with places of 8th, 11th and 15th respectively.

The Cardinal will race again when they host the Stanford Invite on Saturday, September 29th at the Stanford Golf Course. The Men's 8,000 meter race begins at 4:15, while the 4,000 begins at 5:22. The women's 6,000 meter race will start and 4:48, followed by the 4,000 at 5:42.
