Post Game Quotes from ASU's 33-14 Win Over Colorado
Sept. 9, 2007
ASU Head Coach Dennis Erickson
On his overall thoughts about the game:
'I thought that we played very sloppy. Obviously, defensively, we played real well. Offensively, we struggled running the football, and we ended up making some plays in the passing game and ended up winning the football game. I thought we played well in the second and third quarters. Obviously, in the first quarter, we didn't. Fourth quarter, we were just trying to get out of there, which we were able to do because they couldn't get a first down. I'm just really disappointed in the penalties. There's no excuse for that. It's not going to happen ever again, because they aren't going to play. We had some, particularly in the first half, we had some 15-yard penalties that are uncalled for, and then a couple on punt, which are uncalled for. That's the most disappointing thing of the game. You're going to play sloppy, and those things are going to happen, and you're going to win games. I thought we showed a lot of resilience doing that, but the penalties and the discipline part of the penalties really bothers me.'
On the defense:
'We would not have won the football game had we not played good defensively tonight. We're just playing really well. The guys are flying around. Coach Bray and his defensive staff are doing a good job, have good plans. We're tackling really well. We blew a coverage, one or two coverages, one on a touchdown in the corner. But we're just playing good. They haven't been able to run the football in two weeks, and we put them in long third down situations, so I'm real happy with where we're at defensively.'
On the offense:'They were playing two deep, a lot of that, and then they were playing a lot of man and blitzing. They were playing the outside routes, and we were able to hit the dig route in there and had a lot of success with that. We had a couple other times and couldn't get the thing off. We played very sloppy on offense, but we were able to win. Hopefully we can look at it tomorrow and make the corrections. I don't know what they did in the running game to cause confusion, but we've got to get that thing straight.'
On the play of WR Mike Jones:
'He's making plays, him and Chris McGaha are making a lot of plays for us right now. Mike really had a good night tonight. I don't know how many catches he had, but he's making a lot of plays.'
ASU QB Rudy Carpenter
On the game:
'We just made a lot of mistakes on offense, obviously we started off with an interception for a touchdown. Definitely never a good thing. We had too many penalties. Obviously on both sides of the ball we need to be corrected. Hopefully next week we can get our running game going and get back on track.'
On the defense:
'Defense played great tonight and they've been playing great all year. They scored a touchdown, for one. And they held them to seven points. Obviously on offense we can't give them points. We have to help them out by not going three and out like we did earlier in the game. But because they were playing so well, they gave us a chance on offense to stay in the game.'
On struggling on offense in the first quarter:
'We were struggling on first and second down. We were trying to run the ball. It was part of our plan to try to run the ball. We were stranded on first and second down so we started to throw the ball. We got in to some third and long situations and it was hard to complete. Last week we were in third and short situations and it was a lot easier to be successful.
'We had a lot of penalties and we were down 14-nothing but we had a chance to fight some adversity and try to come back from a deficit early on. I think it will help us out early in the season.'
On the Colorado secondary:
'The secondary confused me. I blew a bunch of different things. They blitzed me a lot. They played well on defense in the first half. But once we got a chance to score some points, I think we broke their will a little bit.'
On Kyle Williams' catch at the end of the half:
'That was an unbelievable, unbelievable catch. It was late in the half so I figured whatever, if it is an interception they're not going to get much, I might as well take a chance for the end zone. We needed a big play and Kyle [Williams] ran a pretty good route. He made an unbelievable catch tonight. One of the best catches I've ever seen. I think that was what really sparked us to continue to kick it into another gear and to start playing well. That's what we look for from Kyle. He is a great player.'
ASU WR Michael Jones
On winning the game:
'I thought [the game] was a blast. It was by far the most physical team we've played so far. In my opinion they are ten times better than San Jose [State]. Their front seven are very physical. They stopped the run. So we had to step up.'
On Kyle Williams' catch at the end of the half:
'I saw four guys on Kyle [Williams] and I saw the ball go up in the air. I was like, `Oh my God.' Then I just saw the ball stick in Kyle's hands. I was like, `Wow, we scored.' It was exciting. It was a blast.'
ASU WR Chris McGaha
On the receiving core:
'I think everyone is playing really well and stepping up to the challenge. If teams are going to play us man-to-man they are going to find out they really can't do that. I think everyone is stepping up. Rudy [Carpenter] included.'
CU Head Coach Dan Hawkins
On ASU defense.
'That wasn't an affect, that was no affect at all because we don't huddle on defense either. It's just a matter about making a couple of plays, and it's when you've got one side of the ball, particularly defense. That's playing really really well, the offense has to compliment their answer. It didn't affect us.'
CU RB Demetrius Sumler
on ASU defense
'Really in the first half our offense had really got going. We had the interception and scored a touchdown really fast but our offense... We never got the running game started early in the game, and that's one of the things that Coach Hawkins said we needed to do to win the game.'
CU CB Terrence Wheatley
on ASU offense
'The defense really got frustrated. I think really as a team we got frustrated, because we we had them where we wanted them. We had them at 14-0, few key plays on offense that we let go away. Even as a defense if you don't play offence you get frustrated. You kind of lose your composure as a team, which you can't do as a team. As a team, 14-0 and a chance to have really be 28-0 you have them down, but you've got to knock them out, and we just didn't do it. You've got that momentum, we ended up reeling and blowing coverage, it's almost like a Chinese fire drill after a certain point.
