Q&A with Cal Senior Andrew Jacobson
Sept. 12, 2007
BERKELEY - California senior midfielder Andrew Jacobson is in the midst of his final season playing for the reigning Pac-10 champion Golden Bears. Jacobson and the Bears play at San Francisco this Friday before coming home for a big game against No. 6 Santa Clara this Sunday at 2 p.m. at Edwards Stadium. Cal and Santa Clara have met many times in the recent past, including numerous times in the NCAA Tournament. Jacobson, a Palo Alto native out of Gunn High School, sat down with CalBears.com to discuss the team, his future and the contest against Santa Clara.
CalBears.com: What are your thoughts on playing Santa Clara, a top-ranked local team?
Jacobson: 'I think it's going to be a great game. Whenever we play Santa Clara, it's a big game no matter what the rankings are. With both Santa Clara and ourselves receiving so much national attention, the game will be in the spotlight a bit more.'
CalBears.com: Has a rivalry built up at all between Cal and Santa Clara?
Jacobson: 'Without a doubt, there is a rivalry. So many players on both teams grew up playing together and against each other. During the summer, many of us get together and practice and play games. Because of this, we know a lot about them, and they know a lot about us. It brings about a great rivalry.'
CalBears.com: Being a Palo Alto native, did you have any ties to Stanford, Santa Clara or any other Bay Area college teams?
Jacobson: 'In high school, my club coach was an assistant coach at Stanford, so I got looked at by Stanford. I decided I wanted to stay local so I narrowed my decision down to Cal and Santa Clara. It was an extremely tough decision. In the end, I felt that Cal was the right school for me.'
CalBears.com: What made you decide to come to Cal?
Jacobson: 'It was the combination of excellent athletics and academics. It ended up being a hard decision, but after watching Cal play a few times, I felt like it was the right place to be. I felt like my game would be the most effective here at Cal.'
CalBears.com: How do you feel the team is coming together at this point?
Jacobson: 'I think the team is coming together very well. We are working hard to get better each time we step on the field. We strive to improve every day; every game is a test for us.'
CalBears.com: Do you feel any extra pressure this season being one of the veteran seniors?
Jacobson: 'I would say I have a greater responsibility this year, but not pressure. Every year since I have come to Cal, the seniors on the team have had terrific seasons and have led the team to great accomplishments. It is the responsibility of the seniors to lead by example, but it is the team that wins games, not the individuals.'
CalBears.com: How difficult will it be to repeat as Pac-10 champs and having that 'target' on your back from the other conference teams?
Jacobson: 'I think it's always difficult to repeat as champions in such a hard conference like the Pac-10. However, we try not to look so far down the road at winning the conference. If we focus on every individual game and go out and play our game, we will be happy with the results. One of these results may be another Pac-10 championship.'
CalBears.com: What are your goals for after college?
Jacobson: 'I would like to play professionally. I spent some time in Europe this summer and really got a taste for the passion they have for soccer. The MLS (Major League Soccer) has also become a great league for soccer. My goal is to have a career doing what I love to do.'
CalBears.com: What would your storybook ending be to your Cal career?
Jacobson: 'Accomplishing anything less than a national championship would be a disappointment to me.'
