Forrest Lifts Huskies To 1-0 Win Over New Mexico
Sept. 14, 2007
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Senior forward Kevin Forrest scored his fourth goal of the season in the 61st minute to lead Washington men's soccer to a 1-0 victory over New Mexico in the first round of the Nike/Crescent Financial Solutions Invitational at the UNM Soccer Complex, Friday evening.
The win improved the Huskies to 2-1-1 on the season, while the Lobos dropped to 2-3-0 overall.
Forrest scored on a header after receiving a cross from the left side by freshman defender Brad Keller at the 60:55 mark. His goal came on just the second shot of the half for the Huskies, the other attempt also coming from Forrest in the 50th minute.
'It was a great win where the team really came to together, unified and battled,' UW head coach Dean Wurzberger said following the match. 'We played very well. We have just been waiting for an opportunity for our team to come together and they really seemed to gel tonight. I'm very proud of the way they played.'
Shortly after Forrest's goal, UW sophomore goalkeeper Rylan Hawkins left the game after an injury suffered in a collision with a Lobo forward going after a through ball. Hawkins suffered a broken nose and a chipped tooth. In his absence, redshirt-freshman goalie Stephen Fung made his first career appearance and manned the net nicely to preserve the shutout.
'Stephen had to come in the game under great duress and protect a one-nil lead for 30 minutes,' Wurzberger said. 'He was absolutely brilliant.'
The Lobos outshot the Huskies 12-11, but had only two shots on goal while the Huskies tallied three. Forrest finished with a game-high five shots. Forward Chris Wright led New Mexico with four shots.
The Huskies will next take on third-ranked SMU in the final round of the Nike/Crescent Financial Solutions Invitational, Sunday, Sept. 16, at 11 a.m. PT. The Mustangs fell to defending NCAA champion UC Santa Barbara earlier on Friday, 2-1, in overtime. Live coverage of the match can be found at GoHuskies.com or GoLobos.com.
