No. 11 Cal Falls To USF, 2-1
Sept. 14, 2007
SAN FRANCISCO - Despite getting on the scoreboard early, the No. 11 California men's soccer team lost to San Francisco, 2-1, Friday night at Negoesco Field. USF's Conor Chinn scored both of USF's goals. After winning their first two games of the season, the Golden Bears have now suffered back-to-back losses.
Senior Javier Ayala-Hil, last season's leading scorer for the Bears, got Cal (2-2) on the board early with his first goal of the season. In the sixth minute of the contest, Ayala-Hil received a pass from sophomore Imaan Kerchgani and headed it into the net. Freshman Servando Carrasco also earned an assist on the score. Ayala-Hil's goal is the fourth of the season for the Bears, all four from different scorers (Ayala-Hil, Carrasco, freshman Davis Paul, junior Tyler Barry).
Ayala-Hil's score was one of four shots he took on the night. Senior Andrew Jacobson recorded three shots on goal. Paul, freshman Andrew Wiedeman and junior Pat Marion each took two shots and Wiedeman also recorded a shot on goal.
A little over four minutes after Ayala-Hil's goal, USF (3-1) tallied a goal of its own. In the 11th minute, Chinn took a shot from 15 feet out that found the lower left corner of the goal. After the two quick scores, the first half ended knotted up 1-1.
USF didn't wait very long after halftime to notch the game-winning goal. In the 50th minute, Chinn scored his second goal of the game to give the Dons the lead for good.
Despite allowing two goals, sophomore Stefan Frei stopped five shots, as did his counterpart, Jeremy Coupe.
It doesn't get any easier for the Bears who host No. 8 Santa Clara Sunday at Edwards Stadium at 2 p.m.
