Washington State Soccer Knocks Off Nationally-Ranked Oklahoma State
Sept. 14, 2007
NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Mallory Fox scored less than four minutes into the match and goalkeeper Brynn Bemis notched seven saves to lead the Washington State women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over No. 16 Oklahoma State in the Notre Dame Inn at Saint Mary's Classic, Friday.
Fox, a redshirt freshman from Scottsdale, Ariz., tallied her second goal of the season when she beat Cowgirl goalie Erin Stigler with a chip shot from eight yards out on the right side. Senior Anna Miller and sophomore Jenny Christoph were each credited with an assist on the goal. It was the 12th-career assist for Miller moving her into a tie for seventh on the Cougar career list.
'It's a very exciting win for us in very testing conditions,' WSU Head Coach Matt Potter said. 'We were against the wind in the first half and scored a great goal. From there, it was a workman-like performance against a quality-ranked opponent.'
The victory was the first for the Cougars (3-0-1) away from home against a ranked opponent since a 3-2 double-overtime triumph at No. 11 Tennessee, Sept. 2, 2005. It is also the highest-ranked opponent WSU has defeated since downing the Lady Vols. The Cougars are undefeated through four games for the third time in school history. WSU won its first four matches in 1993 and began the 2002 campaign with five-straight victories. The loss dropped Oklahoma State to 4-1-0 this season.
Washington State, which was outshot 9-4 in extremely windy conditions, received stellar play in net from the senior Bemis. The Coeur d'Alene, Idaho native made an outstanding stop of a Kasey Langdon header in the box during the 75th minute to preserve her ninth-career shutout, tied for fourth on the all-time WSU list. She raised her career-save total to 81, eighth-best all-time for the Cougars.
Washington State will take on Princeton, Sunday at 8 a.m. PDT to conclude play at the Notre Dame Inn at Saint Mary's Classic.
