Volleyball Takes Crowne Plaza/Phoenix Airport Title With Sweep Of VCU

TEMPE, Ariz. - Sarah Reaves had 14 kills to lead led her team to the Crowne Plaza/Phoenix Airport Classic title, as well as clinching tournament MVP award Saturday afternoon as Sun Devils swept the VCU Rams 30-25, 30-15, 30-22 in Tempe. ASU is now 8-5 on the year, and go into next weekend's Pac-10 opener with five consecutive wins. 


Game one saw Margie Giordano lead the offense with six kills and a .417 attack percentage as ASU rolled to a 30-25 win. In game two, the Sun Devils came out blazing as the hit a phenomenal .621 as a team with Sarah Reaves had a perfect 1.000 attack percentage going seven-for-seven in attacks while ASU quickly took a 30-15 win. Game three saw Danielle Fernandes come out strong again with six kills for wrapping the match for the Sun Devils with a 30-22 win.


With the win, the Sun Devils claim the Crowne Plaza/Phoenix Airport Classic title as well as having Sarah Reaves' named tournament MVP. Senior, Danielle Fernandes was also named to the All-Tournament team as well.


With her 23 digs on the night, Sydney Donahue stands at 2,067 career digs, only four shy of tying the all-time Pac-10 career record, and stands 16th all-time in NCAA career history.


The Sun Devils return to action next weekend as they kick-off their Pac-10 season in Los Angeles as they take on USC and UCLA on September 20 and 21.
