No. 6 Women's Soccer Team Downs Cal State Northridge, 3-1
Sept. 16, 2007
Northridge, Calif. - After going scoreless against San Diego on Friday evening, the sixth-ranked UCLA women's soccer team found the back of the net three times on Sunday, posting a 3-1 victory over Cal State Northridge at the Matador Soccer Field. The Bruins, paced by a pair of goals from sophomore Lauren Cheney, improve to 3-1-1 on the season. With the loss, the Matadors fall to 1-4-1.
Cheney tallied the Bruins' lone goal in the first half in the 29th minute of action, as she volleyed in a Lauren Wilmoth cross to give UCLA an early 1-0 lead. She also had a hand in UCLA's second goal in the 73rd minute, as she dribbled down the right sideline before crossing in a ball to Caitlyn Mac Kechnie, who flicked it past Northridge goalkeeper Kellie Drenner to give the Bruins a 2-0 advantage.
Mac Kechnie and Cheney hooked up once again at the 84:26 mark, as Mac Kechnie got hold of a loose ball in the box, pushing it over to Cheney, who beat Drenner from close range.
With UCLA up 3-0 late in the match, Northridge got on the board in the 87th minute, when Salma Tarik sent in a 25-yard shot into the upper-left corner, just beating Bruin goalkeeper Ashley Thompson. Senior Valerie Henderson started the match in goal but was relieved in the 56th minute by Thompson. Each Bruin keeper finished with one save on the day.
UCLA heads to Pepperdine this Friday for a 3:00 p.m. showdown. The Bruins will be at home on Sunday, hosting Hawai'i at 1:00 p.m.
