UW Women Win Second Straight in Soccer
Sept. 16, 2007
PORTLAND, Ore. - Freshman McKenna Waitley came of the bench and scored the game's only goal late in the first half Sunday, lifting Washington to a 1-0 victory over Kansas in the final round of the Portland Invitational women's soccer tournament at Merlo Field.
The Huskies improved to 2-4, sweeping both games during the weekend tournament. UW defeated Yale 2-1 on Friday and the Jayhawks (0-5-1) lost 2-0 to Portland.
The host Pilots beat Yale 1-0 Sunday to win the tournament by virtue of a tiebreaker. Portland posted a plus-three goal differential, edging the Huskies who were at plus-two.
Waitley (El Cajon, Calif.) tallied her first collegiate goal on a header at 43:45. The Huskies capitalized on a corner kick that was served past the far post where sophomore Nikki Murray (Des Moines, Wash./Mt. Rainier) sent it back into the box. Waitley rose up in traffic and directed a five-yard header high into the goal.
Murray was credited with an assist on the play, her second consecutive game-winning assist.
The Jayhawks started the game strong, attempting three shots in the opening four minutes.
'We hung in there and weathered a little bit from them in the beginning,' said UW coach Lesle Gallimore. 'Kansas came out hard. They didn't come out like a team that hasn't won a game. We had to get our legs under us, but we really picked it up after the slow start.'
Sophomore goalkeeper Taylor Carr (Culver City, Calif.) registered her first career shutout. Carr stopped five shots, including a dangerous KU attempt in the 75th minute that she tipped over the crossbar.
'Taylor played great. She had, from beginning to end, the most solid performance that she's had,' Gallimore exclaimed. 'Obviously, as coaches, we are most pleased about getting our first shutout. We always stress that you need to be good defensively to win games. To get our first shutout is a good confidence builder.'
Colleen Quinn had three saves for the Jayhawks, who were out shot 14-11.
The Washington women return home Wednesday, Sept. 19 to host fourth-ranked Portland. Kick-off is 7 p.m. at Husky Soccer Field.
