Sept. 18, 2007
WALNUT CREEK, Calif.-- UCLA junior forward Maxwell Griffin has been named the Pac-10 Men's Soccer Player of the Week for Sept. 11- 17, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Griffin, from Palmdale, Calif., recorded his first career hat trick in a 4-1 win over Penn State on Sunday, a feat that has not been accomplished by a UCLA player since Matt Taylor on Sept. 14, 2003. After a UCLA scoring attempt was saved by PSU's goalkeeper, Griffin got the rebound and scored his first goal in the 55th minute of the game. His second goal, in the 77th minute, was from five yards out into the right corner. His final goal in the 82nd minute was an open net goal.
Against No. 12 Ohio State, Griffin gave UCLA an early lead with the game's first goal in the ninth minute. The Bruins then went on to scored three unanswered goals, only allowing one goal by Ohio State in the 62nd minute.
This is Griffin's third weekly honor and the 29th all-time award for the Bruins.
