UNLV Hands Soccer First Loss of the Season

Sept. 21, 2007

LAS VEGAS - Kristen Shim's second half goal gave UNLV a 1-0 nonconference women's soccer victory over visiting Washington State at the UNLV Rebel Classic Friday.

Shim's tally came at the 63:50 mark when she beat Cougar goalkeeper Brynn Bemis in the left corner. It was the sixth time this season Washington State (4-1-1) fell behind, but the first occasion the Cougars failed to net the equalizer.

Washington State, ranked in three polls this week, including as high as No. 11 by Soccer America, was outshot 5-1 in the first half and 10-5 in the game. UNLV (4-2-1) put all five of its second half shots on goal as Bemis notched four of her six saves in the match after intermission.

'We never really got going,' Cougar Head Coach Matt Potter said. 'Games like this will happen during the course of a long season. We will be fine as long as we learn from the experience and use it to overcome the adversity of a loss.'

The Cougars had a pair of scoring chances in the second half. UNLV goalkeeper Alicia Lugo made an outstanding save of an Allison Scurich's header in the 46th minute and stopped a Natalie Elkind shot in the 88th minute.

Washington State will conclude play in the UNLV Rebel Classic Sunday at 1:30 p.m. when it takes on Nevada.
