Murakami Leads Bruin Women at Pepperdine Invitational
Sept. 22, 2007
Freshman Shannon Murakami was UCLA's top runner on Saturday morning at the Pepperdine Invitational as the Bruin women placed eighth as a team. Murakami finished 11th overall in a time of 21:07 to highlight the Bruins. Cal State Los Angeles won the meet with 64 points.
'We were looking for one or more of our younger athletes in the program to step forward and show some strong leadership in a competitive environment and we got a better performance from Shannon today,' said head coach Eric Peterson. 'I know there's more in there for her.
'Seeing who could step up was the purpose of today's race and now we are looking at putting this team together at nearly full strength for the Bill Dellinger Invite next weekend in Oregon.'
The Bruins are without the leadership of last year's No. 1 runner Allie Bohannon as she is still recovering from minor clean-up surgery on her left knee. UCLA does have strong runners in Claire Rethmeier, Olga Aulet-Leon, Ciara Viehweg and Lauren Jirges, and those women will help lead the team the rest of the season.
'Shannon will run in this group, but the rest of the spots are up for grabs. We anxiously await the return of Allie when the time is appropriate. I'm looking forward to putting this team together and challenging them in a meet like the Bill Dellinger Invite.'
