Mallory Fox Goal Provides Soccer Win over Nevada
Sept. 23, 2007
LAS VEGAS - Mallory Fox converted a penalty kick in the second half and the Washington State women's soccer team rebounded from its first loss of the season to post a 1-0 nonconference victory over Nevada at the UNLV Rebel Classic, Sunday.
Fox's tally came at 64:29 and was the third of the season for the redshirt freshman from Scottsdale, Ariz. The win gave Washington State (5-1-1) its second-best record in school history through seven matches (6-1 in 2002).
'Nevada was a very good team today and we didn't panic and showed the ability to cope with some pressure in the first half,' Cougar Head Coach Matt Potter said. 'In the second half, we had some good movement on offense, applied some pressure of our own and converted a penalty kick into a goal. I was very pleased with the way we responded to the adversity of a loss.'
The Wolf Pack (1-5-1) fired six shots on goal in the first 16 minutes requiring Cougar senior goalkeeper Brynn Bemis to record six of her eight saves in the match. WSU outshot Nevada 11-6 after the Wolf Pack's early assault.
The shutout was the second of the season and 10th career for Bemis moving the Coeur d'Alene, Idaho native into a tie with Jessica Glazer (1995-96) for third on the Cougar all-time list.
Washington State returns home to face UC Santa Barbara Friday, Sept. 28 at 3 p.m. and Idaho State Sunday, Sept. 30 at noon.
