No. 18 USC Shuts Down Michigan 2-0
Sept. 23, 2007
ANN ARBOR, MICH. - The No. 18 USC women's soccer team bumped its overall record up to 6-1-1 with its fourth consecutive shutout effort. A winning weekend in Michigan saw the Women of Troy cap off the trip with a strong first half against Michigan (2-4-1), tallying a 2-0 win over the Wolverines on Sunday. Freshman Alyssa Davila notched her third game-winning goal of her career, finishing off a swift pass from Amy Rodriguez for a score in the fifth minute of play. Less than 20 minutes later, another Trojan freshman punched in the next score, as Megan Ohai scored her fourth goal of the year to lift USC ahead of Michigan 2-0.
Davila's goal came at close-range, with the USC strikers getting deep in Wolverine territory. On the attack, Rodriguez closed in on the goal, and then slipped a quick pass to Davila, who caught the keeper out of position and put away the score to get the Trojans its fastest goal of the season and put them up 1-0 just over four minutes into the game.
Michigan earned a series of corner kicks next. A USC foul set up a strike on goal by Michigan, but USC goalkeeper Kristin Olsen made the save to bring up a corner. Olsen again put a stop to the attack with another save. A USC strike later resulted in a Michigan save and ensuing counter by the Wolverines. Michigan got a shot on goal out of it, but Olsen nabbed the save there as well.
In the 24th minute of play, a USC surge saw a strong shot by Lauren Brown nail the post, but Megan Ohai in great position for the rebound, getting a head on the ball to redirect it in, lifting USC ahead 2-0 for a lead that would stand through the half and on through the remainder of the game.
USC now returns to California for a pair of games this week. First, the Trojans pay a visit to Long Beach State for a 4 p.m. game on Friday (Sept. 28). Next, the Women of Troy host Portland for one last nonconference match before Pac-10 play begins. USC and Portland clash at 1 p.m. on Sunday (Sept. 30).
