Sept. 23, 2007

STANFORD - The No. 24 California men's soccer team beat Princeton, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at Maloney Field in the Stanford Invitational. The Golden Bears jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first half and added one more score in the second half to gain the victory. Cal improved to 4-2-1, while Princeton fell to 0-6.

Senior Javier Ayala-Hil scored Cal's first goal in the 35th minute of the first half. The score came off a free kick and beat the keeper in the upper corner. Junior Tyler Barry scored the game-winning goal in the 52nd minute of the second half, with an assist from senior Andrew Jacobson. Barry scored off a cross pass that went into the goal after bouncing off the keeper's hands. It was the second goal of the season for both Ayala-Hil and Barry.

Shortly after Barry's goal, Princeton's Teddy Schneider got the Tigers on the board with a score in the 57th minute.

Princeton outshot the Bears 19-9. Senior Luke Sassano and freshman Anthony Avalos each notched a shot on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Stefan Frei made three saves.

The Bears return to Berkeley next weekend when they face Towson Saturday, Sept. 29, at 2 p.m. at Edwards Stadium.
