Late Goal Pushes #17 BYU Past UW Women 2-1

Sept. 24, 2007

PROVO, Utah - Katie Larkin scored two goals Monday night, including the game-winner with just over six minutes left in 17th-ranked Brigham Young's 2-1 win over the Washington women's soccer team at South Stadium.

The Cougars (7-0-2) entered the game as the only team in the country that had not surrendered a goal. UW senior Dani Bridges (Maple Valley, Wash./Tahoma) netted the first score allowed by BYU, a penalty kick in the 78th minute. That goal halted the Cougars' perfect defensive record after 849 scoreless minutes.

The hard-luck Huskies (2-7) suffered their third straight defeat, each of them one-goal setbacks during the last six days. All three games were lost when opponents scored a goal inside the final eight minutes. UW lost 1-0 to No. 3 Portland on Sept. 19 and 3-2 at Utah on Saturday.

Despite being outshot 8-7 in the first half, BYU took a 1-0 lead into halftime on Larkin's first goal at 42:47. UW sophomore goalkeeper Taylor Carr (Culver City, Calif.) had saved four of the previous six Cougar shots.

Washington got the equalizer at 77:21 when Bridges converted her second penalty kick in as many tries this year. It was her team-leading third goal of the season.

The game remained tied for six minutes before Larkin tallied her seventh goal of the season. Nicole Urry was credited with an assist on the game-winning goal at 83:41.

Carr registered five saves for the Huskies, who were out shot by a 20-13 margin. The Cougars posted a 13-5 shot advantage in the second half.

BYU's Erika Woodbury, who recorded shutouts in each of the previous eight games, stopped nine shots.

The Washington women return home to host Eastern Washington at Husky Soccer Field, Friday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m.
