Schreefel 68 Leads USC At Fall Preview
Sept. 24, 2007
Behind Dewi Claire Schreefel's 5-under 68, the No. 4 USC women's golf team is in third place after the first round of the 2007 Margaret Branch NCAA Preview at the UNM Championship Course in Albuquerque, N.M., on Monday (Sept. 24).
USC finished with a combined 292 (E), five shots behind first place Duke (287) and second place UCLA (291). The field includes some most of the top programs in the country, including the three-time defending NCAA champion Blue Devils.
Schreefel's 68 was her lowest round at USC since a 67 at the Stanford Pepsi Intercollegiate in the fall of 2005. Starting on the 10th hole, she carded a 4-under 32 going out, including consecutive birdies on the 16th, 17th and 18th holes. She bogeyed the 3rd hole on the way in and finished the round with birdies on the 8th and 9th holes. She is tied for 2nd, one shot off the lead.
Freshman Joanna Lee was USC's next highest finisher after a 1-over 74, tying her for 34rd. She had three birdies on the round, including one on the 8th hole to bring her to within a stroke of par.
Senior Paola Moreno and sophomore Belen Mozo are tied for 36th, each with a 2-over 75. Moreno got back to par with birdies on the 3rd and 4th holes, but fell back with bogeys on 7 and 8. Mozo was 1-under after the front 9 but couldn't generate anything more in the red to offset three back 9 bogeys.
Freshman Lizette Salas is tied for 46th after a 3-over 76. She rebounded from a 3-over front 9 with a par back 9, including a birdie on the 5th hole.
The tournament continues Tuesday and Wednesday (Sept. 25-26), beginning at 8 a.m. (MDT). USC tees off beginning at 9:20 a.m. Tuesday.
