Former Sun Devil Davila Selected for Team USA Road Running Team

TEMPE, Ariz. - Desiree Davila, a former All-American track & field and cross country student-athlete for the Arizona State University program, has been selected to compete for Team USA at the 2007 IAAF World Road Racing Championships on October 14 in Udine, Italy. Davila, a native of Chula Vista, Calif., was an All-American in track & field (5,000m run) and cross country while competing for ASU from 2001-05.

The World Road Running Championships is a half-marathon distance contested on a 7,000 meter criterium-loop through the streets of Udine. It will offer a total of $225,000 in prize money. Each team will consist of five athletes, with the Top 3 athletes scoring for the team. Team members were selected based on performances time performances at 15 km, half marathon, 20 km and 25 km.

Davila earned All-America honors twice during her career in Tempe, placing 10th in the 5,000m run at the 2003 NCAA Outdoor Championships before placing 44th at the NCAA Cross Country Championships the following fall. From there, Davila went on to running longer distances and, most recently, finished fifth (1:10.08) at the 2007 USA 20km Championships, held September 3 in New Haven, Conn.

The former Sun Devil will be representing the Stars and Stripes at the World Championships for the second year in a row after earning a berth on the U.S. team that competed in the inaugural event last year in Debrecen, Hungary. In that race, Davila ran 1:11.56 to place 43rd overall and fourth on the U.S. squad while the team finished 10th.

Team USA also includes Deena Kastor (Mammoth Lakes, Calif.), Katie McGregor (Minneapolis, Minn.), Alicia (Craig) Shay (Flagstaff, Ariz.) and Tara Storage (Dayton, Ohio).
