Former UCLA Soccer Player Jonathan Moore Passes Away

Sept. 27, 2007

Former UCLA soccer player and avid supporter Jonathan Moore passed away at his home in Los Angeles on Wednesday, Sept. 19 just days after his 60th birthday.

Moore transferred to UCLA from Ventura College and was a member of the UCLA soccer team in 1968 and 1969. He led the team in scoring as a junior as the Bruins posted a 12-2-1 record that year. During Moore's senior year, UCLA won 14 straight games, the third-longest winning streak in school history. In his two seasons of play with UCLA, Moore led his team to a combined record of 26-3-1.

Moore graduated from UCLA in 1970 with a degree in Psychology and earned a Master's Degree in Bilingual/Cross Cultural Education, graduating with honors from Cal State Dominguez Hills. He spent his entire 35-year teaching career in the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District, teaching at Madison and Edison Elementary Schools and at John Adams Middle School. In addition, he was an instructor with the District's Immersion and English as a Second Language (ESL) programs. He was involved with the development of the Bilingual Advisory Committees at the school and District levels. In 1982, he was selected as the District Teacher of the Year and was a member of AMAE (The Association of Mexican-American Educators).

An active member of the First Evangelical Free Church of Los Angeles, Moore was a volunteer and served on the Church Board. He also taught in Junior Church and assisted the youth groups.

Moore often combined two of his favorite hobbies - photography and attending UCLA soccer games and events. He was a fixture at UCLA soccer events with his camera and often contributed photos and scrapbooks to the soccer program. In addition, he enjoyed traveling and competing in ballet and trick skiing events. He was a member of the National Ski Patrol for 20 years, receiving a Yellow Merit Star.

Moore, who was born Sept. 5, 1947 in Tolten, Chile to missionary parents, is survived by his wife Cathy, daughter Melissa, and son Jonathan.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, Sept. 29 at 11:00 am at the First United Methodist Church on 1008 11th Street in Santa Monica.
