Cal Men Second, Women Eighth at Stanford Invitational

Sept. 29, 2007

STANFORD - The California men's cross country team took second with 66 points Saturday at the 34th-annual Stanford Invitational at the Stanford Golf Course. Highlighting Cal's strong finish was senior David Torrence who placed third at 23:25. He was one four runners from the men's team to finish in the top 15. The Golden Bear women finished eighth with 231 points.

'Our men's team ran very well today,' head coach Tony Sandoval said. 'Our first four ran toe-to-toe with Stanford. This was a very significant race for us, taking second place, especially since we held back a few guys due to sickness. Overall it was a good race, very encouraging, but we still have work to do.'

Stanford won the men's 8K team crown with 37 points. Following the Bears, UC Santa Barbara placed third with 97 points, followed by Adams State (123) and Chico State (208).

After Torrence, the other three top runners were juniors Mark Matusak and Yosef Ghebray and sophomore Michael Coe. Matusak took 10th, touring the course in 23:55. Ghebray and Coe were right behind him in 11th and 12th, respectively. Senior Chris Chavez crossed the finish line at 25:11 (51st).

Scott Bauhs (unattached) and Aron Rono (Azusa Pacific) finished first and second, respectively, in 23:07 and 23:13.

Stanford won the women's 6K title with 27 points, while Adams State was second with 78 points and UC Irvine was third with 133.
