Stanford Cross Country Sweeps Stanford Invitational

The Stanford men's and women's cross country teams swept the long courses for the second year in a row. The men recorded a low score of 37 in the 8,000 meter race to defeat second place California who scored a 66. The women posted a low score of 27 to defeat second place Adams State with 78.
The men had four runners finish in the top ten and all seven runners earned top 30 finishes in the 8,000 meter race. Senior Neftalem Araia led the Cardinal runners with his fourth place finish in 23:40, followed right behind by junior Hari Mix in fifth with a 23:46. Senior Russell Brown followed his three teammates as he earned a sixth place finish with a 23:47, while junior Hakon DeVries ran to a tenth place finish in a time of 24:17. The last point scorer for the Cardinal was freshman Justin Marpole-Bird who posted a 12th place finish in 24:28. The final two runners for Stanford were junior Chris Mocko (24:45) and senior Lauren Jespersen (24:55) as they finished 19th and 28th, respectively. Scott Bauhs took the individual title as he finished with the winning time of 23:07.
With all five point scorers finishing in the top ten, the women ran away with the top spot as they posted a score of 27 in the 6,000 meter race. Senior Arianna Lambie picked up where she left off last season, taking the individual title in a time of 19:48 as she was the only runner in the race to break 20 minutes. Junior Alicia Follmar was the next runner to come in for Stanford with a fourth place finish in 20:52, while senior Lauren Centrowitz followed closely behind in sixth with a 20:55. The youngest Cardinal in the race, sophomore Kate Neihaus, posted a seventh place finish with a time of 20:59, while the final point scorer was junior Katie Harrington who earned a ninth place finish in 21:08. Senior Lindsay Allen (21:31) and junior Shannon Bergstedt (23:17) recorded a 17th and a 98th place finish, respectively.
Both the men's and women's teams improved to 2-0 on the year and will be back in action on Saturday, October 13 for the Bronco Classic in Santa Clara.
