Women's Tennis Completes Play At 2007 Cal Invitational

Sept. 30, 2007

BERKELEY - The California women's tennis team completed competition in the 2007 Cal Nike Invitational on Sunday with several Bears competing in semifinal and finals matches. The three-day event included 12 different schools and consisted of three singles flights, two doubles flights and also a series of round-robin matches. Sunday's matches concluded the invitational and determined champions in all flights.

In one Gold Flight semifinal, senior Susie Babos lost to Northwestern freshman Maria Mosolova in a two-set upset (6-3, 6-2), setting up an all-Wildcat final. However, the Gold Flight semifinals produced no championship match as junior Georgia Rose and Mosolova agreed not to play each other.

Each advancing past their opponents in their semifinal, junior Claire Ilcinkas met fellow junior Bojana Bobusic in the Blue Flight singles championship match. The first set went the distance and forced a tie-breaker which Ilcinkas won 11-9. The second set started off just as close but Ilcinkas pulled away for the 6-4 win and the bracket championship amongst Blue Flight entrants.

In the White Flight singles championship match, freshman Bobbie Englert took Santa Clara freshman Courtney Hull to three sets, one of which included a tie-breaker, but was unable to notch the win, falling 6-7(10-4), 7-5, 6-3.

In doubles play, the Gold Flight doubles final was won by Northwestern duo Alexis Conill and Lauren Lui, defeating Laila Abdala and Lauren Megale of Arizona State 9-7. The Blue Flight doubles final was also claimed by Northwestern, with Maria Mosolova and Nazlie Ghazal defeating Arizona State duo, Kelcy McKenna and Nadia Abdala 8-5.

Participating in round robin singles matches, senior Marion Ravelojaona, redshirt sophomore Daron Moore and freshman Rachael Dillon each posted victories over players from Arizona State. In round robin doubles matches, the Bears faced Long Beach State, with the duo of Claire Ilcinkas and Marion Ravelojaona defeating Deborah Armstrong and Jessica Weeks. The team of Rachael Dillon and Daron Moore were also able to defeat Hannah Grady and Stephanie Bengson from Long Beach State.

The Golden Bears will next travel to Los Angeles to participate in the All-American Championships presented by Riviera. Senior Susie Babos will represent California in the main draw on Oct. 4-7 while fellow seniors Cristina Visico and Stephanie Kusano play qualifying matches on Oct. 2-3. Freshman Marina Cossou and Babos will also compete as a doubles team in the qualifying rounds.
