CAL HEADS TO SAN FRANCISCO STATE INVITATIONAL: The California cross country team returns to action at the San Francisco State Invitational Saturday, Oct. 6, at Lindley Meadow in Golden Gate Park. The women's 6K race starts at 8:15 a.m., followed by the men's 8K event at 9 a.m. The course consists of grass and mostly packed dirt trails; rolling terrain with a downhill last half mile finish.

RECAPPING THE STANFORD INVITATIONAL: The California men's cross country team took second with 66 points last Saturday at the 34th-annual Stanford Invitational at the Stanford Golf Course. Highlighting Cal's strong finish was senior David Torrence who placed third at 23:25. He was one of four runners from the men's team (Mark Matusak, Yosef Ghebray, Michael Coe) to finish in the top 15. The Golden Bear women finished eighth with 231 points. Senior Rebecca Yau paced the Bears' women's team with her 12th-place finish (21:17). It was an improvement from last year for Torrence and the men's team when Torrence placed seventh and the team took fourth.

CAL TAKES SECOND AT USF INVITATIONAL: The men's and women's teams both took second in the San Francisco Invitational Sept. 1 at Golden Gate Park to open the 2007 season. The Golden Bear women placed three runners in the top 10. Freshman Chelsea Reilly placed second (18:13.60) on the 5K course, while senior Rebecca Yau took fourth (18:23.50). Junior Rebecca Palm finished eighth (18:40.70). Freshman Johnny Cheng paced the Cal men by placing fourth (26:21.80). Two other freshmen for the Bears grabbed top-10 placings. Austin Jett posted an eighth-place showing (26:31.30), while Patrick Lynch took 10th (26:32.50).

MATUSAK, TORRENCE PACE CAL MEN: David Torrence (Tarzana, Calif.) and Mark Matusak (Torrance, Calif.), the 2005 Pac-10 Newcomer of the Year, are likely Cal's one-two punch again in 2007. Torrence represented Cal in the 2006 NCAA Championships and earned second-team All-Pac-10 honors and All-West region honors. Matusak was the top freshman at the 2005 Pac-10 meet, placing 17th (24:56). Matusak notched two top-25 finishes in 2006. Torrence and Matusak finished first and second, respectively, among Cal runners for each race they both competed in last season.

YAU LEADS BEAR WOMEN: Senior Rebecca Yau (Orinda, Calif.) is expected to lead the Cal women this season. Yau paced the Bears in all but one competition last season. She led the team at the NCAA West Regional with a 33rd-place (22:24.69) showing. Beginning with her second-place finish in the Aggie Open, Yau paced Cal in every race for the rest of the season.

2006 IN REVIEW: David Torrence and Rebecca Yau led the way for Cal a year ago. The men's team finished 10th in the NCAA West Regional behind a 13th-place showing (30:34.99) from Torrence, who qualified for the NCAA Championships. At the national meet, Torrence took 92nd place (32:31.2). The Cal women's team finished 18th at the NCAA regional. Yau placed 13th at the Stanford Invitational to lead all Cal harriers and turned in two top-five showings.
