Oct. 2, 2007
BERKELEY, Calif. - California freshman forward Alex Morgan earned an assortment of honors after leading the Golden Bears to a 4-0 victory over Saint Mary's and a 2-0 road triumph at No. 1 and previously unbeaten Santa Clara. Morgan has been named the Pac-10 Women's Soccer Player of the Week for Sept. 25-Oct. 1, the Soccer America Player of the Week and was tabbed to Soccer Buzz's Team of the Week.
A product of Diamond Bar, Calif., Morgan notched four goals in two matches over the weekend. The freshman netted a hat trick in California's win over Saint Mary's Sept. 28 and struck the first blow in the Golden Bears' 2-0 defeat of the top-ranked Santa Clara Broncos.
Morgan's hat trick is the first by a Cal player since Sierra Schlesinger accomplished the feat in a 5-0 road win over Pacific Sept. 26, 2004. Morgan almost equaled the school record of four goals, but her shot less than four minutes into the game went off the right post.
Morgan's four goals propelled her into the team lead in goals, as well as points. The forward now has five goals (T4th Pac-10) for 10 points (T6th Pac-10) on the season.
Cal (8-2-0), which moved up to as high as No. 12 according to Soccer America, is currently in the midst of a three-game win streak as it takes this week off. The Bears enter conference play on Fri., Oct. 12, facing rival Stanford (9-1-0) in the marquee match-up of the week.
