Oct. 4, 2007
TEMPE, Ariz. - With its 16th season set to begin on October 9, the Arizona Fall League will once again have plenty of Arizona State University baseball representation on its rosters. Former Devils Jeff Larish of the Detroit Tigers system, Tuffy Gosewisch of the Philadelphia Phillies system, Zechry Zinicola of the Washington Nationals system and Pat Bresnehan of the Pittsburgh Pirates system will all suit up for the 2007 Arizona Fall League season. The four former Sun Devils now bring the all-time total of former ASU players to play in the fall league to 27.
Larish, Gosewisch, Zinicola and Bresnehan will hope to follow in the footsteps of former Devils who have played in the AFL and have gone on to play in the Major League Baseball. Travis Buck (A's), Paul Lo Duca (Mets), Andre Ethier (Dodgers) and Dustin Pedroia (Red Sox) are all former Devils who participated in the Arizona Fall League and have since gone on to careers in Major League Baseball. In addition to the four players, former Devil Todd Steverson will coach for the Phoenix Desert Dogs this year.
Larish, who will play for the Peoria Saguaros, wore the Maroon and Gold from 2002-05. He left ASU as the #2 home run hitter in school history with 51 round-trippers, hitting .333 for his career. He was a First Team All-American in 2003 and a two-time First Team All-Pac-10 selection. Larish was named to the All-College World Series Team in 2005 after his three-homer game against Nebraska. He was a fifth round pick of the Tigers in the 2005 draft and hit .267 with 28 home runs for the Erie SeaWolves this past season.
Tuffy Gosewisch will once again team up with Larish on the Saguaros after spending four seasons as teammates at Arizona State. Gosewisch was a three-time All-Pac-10 honorable mention during his time in Tempe, and was a Johnny Bench Award semifinalist in 2004. He played 215 games as a Devil, virtually all of them behind the plate, and was an 11th round pick of the Phillies in the 2005 draft. Gosewisch was an All-Star in 2007 for the Lakewood BlueClaws.
Zechry Zinicola, who will suit up for the Peoria Javelinas, played three seasons in Tempe (2004-06), tying a then-freshman record with eight saves in his debut season. Zinicola went 10-9 with 18 career saves for the Devils, and also hit .276 with five home runs. He earned Freshman All-American honors in 2004 and was an All-Pac-10 honorable mention that same year. He was a 6th round pick of the Nationals in 2006, and had six saves for the Harrisburg Senators in 2007.
Pat Bresnehan will play for the Phoenix Desert Dogs after spending three seasons at Arizona State (2004-06). Bresnehan went 11-9 with seven saves during his time in Tempe, twice earning All-Pac-10 honorable mention. He was a 5th round pick of the Pirates in 2006 and went 5-3 with six saves while splitting time with the Lynchburg Hillcats and the Altoona Curve.
Todd Steverson played for the Sun Devils from 1990 to 1992. Had a breakout year in his junior season, batting .303 with 12 homers and 38 RBI, while adding 17 SB. He was named All-Pac-10 Honorable Mention honors in 1992 and went on to become a 1st round pick (#25 overall) of the Toronto Blue Jays. Steverson played parts of two seasons in the big leagues for the Tigers and the Padres.
The Arizona Fall League runs from October 9 through November 15 at Spring Training stadiums across the Valley.
