Cougar Throwers Hold Sixth Annual Car Wash
Oct. 4, 2007
PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State University Track and Field throwers will hold their Sixth Annual Car Wash Sunday, October 14, in downtown Pullman, with the money raised going to defer the on-going medical expenses for five-year-old Bailey Chalmers from Princeton, Idaho.
Bailey's mother, Jill Chalmers Cochrane, said he was diagnosed with merosin-positive congenital muscular dystrophy, which causes muscle weakness, just before his second birthday. This past summer he suffered an E.coli bacterial infection and was hospitalized for a week at Pullman Regional Hospital and then transferred to Sacred Heart Children's Hospital in Spokane via life-flight for another three weeks. A kindergartener at Potlatch Elementary School, Bailey has regular check-ups to monitor his kidneys and has extensive physical therapy.
Bailey has a one-year-old sister named Skyler and a lot of family in the Palouse region. Mother Jill grew up in Albion and graduated from Pullman High. Step-father Andy Cochrane is from Potlatch and works for the Pearson Fence in Colfax.
In the past five years, the Cougar throwers have washed cars and raised over $6,100 to donate to local community members in need. Previous car washes have raised money for cancer patients, a transplant recipient and the Pullman Community Action Center.
'The Cougar throwers are grateful to the support we have received from Pullman and surrounding communities for the past five years,' WSU Associate Coach Debra Farwell said. 'The people who have received the donations from our car washes are truly deserving and we are happy to be able to assist Bailey Chalmers this year.'
The Washington State javelin, discus, shot put and hammer throwers will put their muscles to work from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Sunday, October 14, at the Bank of America parking lot, 425 East Main Street, in Pullman. The Pullman Chevron Gas Station is donating the water used for the car wash.
Those unable to stop by the car wash can donate by contacting Debra Farwell at 509-335-0260.
