Rochestie Gives Back to Basketball Program

Oct. 4, 2007

PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State University guard Taylor Rochestie has chosen to come off his scholarship next year, for his senior season in 2008-09, in order to open up another scholarship for the men's basketball program.

A 6-foot-1 guard who is expected to start this season for the Cougars, Rochestie is voluntarily giving up his scholarship when he becomes a senior as a way to give back to a program that gave him a chance. After a knee injury prior to his sophomore season at Tulane University, Rochestie transferred to WSU in the spring of 2006 and sat out the remainder of the season.

'When I first learned of this option to open up a scholarship by giving up mine, I thought it sounded great,' Rochestie said. 'I am thankful that I was fortunate enough to be in a situation where I could help the team out. At the end of the year you ask yourself what you could have done, gone a little harder in practice, hit a key shot, but this was something at the beginning of the year that's outside of playing that I could do. This is the least and the most I could do at the same time.

'After I talked with my dad about it, I knew it was a no-brainer,' Rochestie continued. 'The recruits that I've met are exciting, athletic and are special kids. To be able to set something up for the future and to continue what we've got going means the world to me. To be able to watch the team a couple of years down the road and see that Washington State basketball still holds the same principles and foundation as when we left will be a great feeling.'

In his first season as a Cougar last year, Rochestie averaged 4.6 points and nearly two assists with six starts in 34 games.

'This is such an unselfish act and just shows how gracious he and his family are,' WSU Head Coach Tony Bennett said. 'I think this shows how much of a leader and great teammate Taylor is and for him to want to do something like this to help establish the future of our program in this manner is just incredible.'
