Bruins Conclude Play at ITA All-American Championships

LOS ANGELES - UCLA women's tennis player Riza Zalameda won her round of 16 singles match on Friday morning but ended up falling in the quarterfinals later in the day, as the Bruins concluded play at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships. Men's tennis player Haythem Abid also lost in the round of 16 in Tulsa, Okla. on Friday.

Zalameda began the day in impressive fashion, knocking out third-seeded Melanie Gloria of Fresno State, 6-2, 6-1 in the round of 16. Her quest for a title came to an end in the quarterfinals, however, as she lost to Georgia Tech's Maya Johansson, 3-6, 6-0, 6-2.

Sophomore Yasmin Schnack was defeated in the round of 16 Friday morning, losing to Aurelija Miseviciute of Arkansas, 6-1, 6-4.

The only other Bruin woman in action on Friday was senior Tracy Lin, who was playing in the consolation draw. She opened the day with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Furman's Laura Gioia, however ended up falling to Georgia Tech's Kristi Miller, 7-6, 6-4 later in the afternoon. Miller was seeded fifth in the main draw.

Abid, playing at the Polo Ralph Lauren All-American held at Tulsa's Michael D. Case Tennis Center, lost a tough battle with top-seeded Somedev Devvarman of Virginia on Friday. The Bruin junior, who was the first person to take a set off Devvarman in the tournament, ended up falling 7-5, 4-6, 6-4. Devvarman, the 2007 NCAA Singles Champion, extended his winning streak to 23 matches.
