Oct. 5, 2007
BERKELEY - The No. 20 California men's soccer team got the Pac-10 portion of its schedule off on the right foot, as the Golden Bears defeated No. 24 Washington, 2-1, Friday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. Freshman Andrew Wiedeman tallied an assist on both goals, as he notched his team-leading seventh and eighth points of the season. Freshman Servando Carrasco and junior Pat Marion scored the goals. Friday's victory increased the Bears' winning streak to four and it also marked the fourth consecutive victory against Washington.
Cal got on the board quickly, scoring in the fourth minute of the game. On a throw in, senior Luke Sassano found Wiedeman, who passed it back to Carrasco and the freshman fired a shot that hit the back of the net. It was the second goal of the season for Carrasco. Washington evened the score in the 23rd minute, as Raphael Cox recorded the goal.
Shortly after halftime, the Bears scored the game winner. Junior Michael Nieraeth passed to Marion on a corner kick. Marion passed to Wiedeman who gave the ball back to him in front of the goal. Marion earned his first goal of the season when he blasted a shot that tucked underneath the crossbar. The score also marked Wiedeman's team-leading fourth assist of the campaign.
Cal would hold defensively to preserve the win. Sophomore keeper Stefan Frei made six saves, five of them coming in the first half. The Huskies outshot the Bears, 13-10.
The Bears next host Oregon State Sunday, Oct. 7, at 2 p.m. at Edwards Stadium.
