Fischer Falls In Bulldog Classic Final

Oct. 7, 2007

FRESNO, Calif. - The first tournament of the fall for the Washington men's tennis team came to an end this afternoon. Junior Patrik Fischer was defeated in the final of the main singles flight at the Bulldog Classic hosted by Fresno State at the Wathen Tennis Center, capping a busy weekend for the young Dawgs.

The Huskies feature just one senior, Andy Kuharszky, on their roster this season and several players got their first taste of collegiate tennis over the last three days. As two of just four upper-classmen, Kuharszky and Fischer figure at or near the top of UW's singles line-up come dual season, and both had solid starts to the fall with Kuharszky reaching the semis and Fischer the final.

In the final match, Fischer lost to Dean Jackson of San Diego in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. Jackson was the bracket's No. 3-seed while Fischer was given a 5-8 seeding.

Despite the loss, Fischer still posted a 4-1 mark over the weekend.

Sophomore Derek Drabble was the only other Husky in action on Sunday. Drabble faced Fresno State's Tejesvi Veerepalli in the Flight I Singles Consolation semifinals, but went down, 6-4, 6-3.

Next weekend the Huskies will welcome in many of the top teams on the west coast, including Pac-10 teams Stanford, California, and Oregon--for the Wilson/ITA Northwest Regionals at Nordstrom Tennis Center. The Regional tournament features more than 64 singles players and 32 doubles teams all vying for a bid in November's ITA National Indoor Championships, the second of college tennis' three majors. ITA Northwest Regionals run from Friday, Oct. 12 through Tuesday, Oct. 16.
