Golden Bears In Fourth Place After Round One of Alister MacKenzie

FAIRFAX, Calif. - The University of California men's golf team is in fourth place after the first round of action on Monday at the sixth annual Alister MacKenzie Invitational at the Meadow Club's Par 71, 6,686-yard course. Junior George Gandranata and sophomore Evan Derian lead the Bears with impressive 67's. The second round of action is currently underway.

Derian had eight birdies in the opening round, while Gandranata played very consistent golf with six birdies and just two bogeys. Freshman teammate Stephen Hale shot an opening round 68 with four birdies and an eagle on the par-five 15th hole. Sophomore Andrey Mindirgasov also tallied an eagle (on the par-five first hole, as he finished at plus-one. Senior Freddy Wolfe rounded out the Golden Bears lineup, shooting a plus-two 73 - his top round of the season to date.

Fresno State leads the tournament with a 271 (-13), followed by St. Mary's (272, -12) and Washington (273, -11). Cal is tied for fourth with UC Davis at 274 (-10).

The second round is expected to be completed by 7 p.m. this evening while the third and final round will tee off at 8 a.m. on Tuesday. Results after each round are available at www.GolfStat.com.
