Oct. 6, 2007

LOS ANGELES - California women's tennis senior Susie Babos notched a semifinal victory Saturday at the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships presented by Fila at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif. This event is the first of three national championship events during the2007-08 collegiate tennis season.

Seeded No. 4 in the main draw as the tournament's defending champion, Babos defeated Georgia Tech's Amanda McDowell 6-2, 6-4 in the semifinal to set herself up for a shot at a second consecutive All-American Championship crown. Clemson's Ani Mijacika beat Georgia Tech's Maya Johansson 6-2, 6-1 in today's other semifinal and will be Babos' final opponent of the tournament. Babos, who has not lost a set in her four victories, is looking to become the first player since San Diego's Zuzana Lesenarova to repeat as the tournament champion. Lesenarova won back-to-back titles in 1998-99. Only two other players have won consecutive titles at the Riviera - Stanford's Sandra Birch in 1989-90 and Mississippi's Paloma Collantes in 1991-92. Mijacika is the first Clemson player to reach the All-American singles final.

Babos and Mijacika have met on the court before. No. 21 in the ITA national singles rankings, Mijacika squared off against Babos once last season during the NCAA team tournament. The two split sets in a match that was eventually suspended due to Cal clinching the team win.

Sunday's singles final begins at 11 a.m. PST and will be broadcast live, with point-by-point action and analysis will on
