CAL HEADS TO PRE-NCAA MEET:
The California cross country team will compete at the site of the 2007 NCAA Championships in the Pre-NCAA meet Saturday, Oct. 13, at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course at the Wabash Valley Sports Center. The men's 8K blue race starts at 8:00 a.m. PT, followed by the men's 8K white race at 8:40 a.m. PT. The women begin competition with the 6K blue race at 9:20 a.m. PT. After the women's 6K white race at 9:55 a.m. PT, two more open races will follow to round out the day's action.

THE BEAR'S LINEUP:
Cal's lineup for the women's 6K features Rebecca Yau, Gabriela Rios-Sotelo, Pippa Macdonald, Alison Greggor, Chelsea Reilly, Rowena Tam, and Taylor Bryson. The Bears' men's team's top runners include David Torrence, Mark Matusak, Kari Karlsson, Yosef Ghebray, Chris Chavez, Michael Coe and either Eric Lee or Matt Miller.

THE COMPETITION:
26 out of the top 30 teams in the country will be competing this weekend. Two weekends ago, No. 2 Colorado swept the competition at the annual Rocky Mountain shootout, with Brent and Sara Vaughn winning the men's and women's races. Wisconsin, also ranked No. 2, took second, losing to host and top-ranked Oregon at the Bill Dellinger Invitational, with junior Matt Withrow winning the individual title.

CAL TAKES SECOND AT SFSU INVITATIONAL:
The Cal men took second in the San Francisco State Invitational at Golden Gate Park last weekend. Junior Eric Lee was the top runner for the Bears, placing fourth and touring the course in 25:34. Two other men (Matt Miller and Dawit Tesfasilassie) finished in the top 15. The Bears' men's team has now tallied three straight second-place finishes to open the 2007 campaign. The women also received a second-place finish with 71 points. Sophomore Alison Greggor led the way with a time of 22:38, good enough for fourth. Two freshmen (Rowena Tam and Taylor Bryson) rounded out the Bear's top 15 finishers.

RECAPPING THE STANFORD INVITATIONAL:
The California men's cross country team took second with 66 points last Saturday at the 34th-annual Stanford Invitational at the Stanford Golf Course. Highlighting Cal's strong finish was senior David Torrence who placed third at 23:25. He was one of four runners from the men's team (Mark Matusak, Yosef Ghebray, Michael Coe) to finish in the top 15. The Golden Bear women finished eighth with 231 points. Senior Rebecca Yau paced the Bears' women's team with her 12th-place finish (21:17). It was an improvement from last year for Torrence and the men's team, when Torrence placed seventh and the team took fourth.

2006 IN REVIEW:
David Torrence and Rebecca Yau led the way for Cal a year ago. The men's team finished 10th in the NCAA West Regional behind a 13th-place showing (30:34.99) from Torrence, who qualified for the NCAA Championships. At the national meet, Torrence took 92nd place (32:31.2). The Cal women's team finished 18th at the NCAA regional. Yau placed 13th at the Stanford Invitational to lead all Cal harriers and turned in two top-five showings.
